The Haven has saved thousands of cats, but it has also saved its share of humans.

The Haven has saved thousands of cats, but it has also saved its share of humans. My mother, Lois Shands, was one of those people.

A lifelong cat lover, she reached the point where she could no longer have a pet. So for more than two years I picked her up every week from the assisted-living facility and brought her to the Haven to spend time with the cats there.

Petting and playing with the Haven kitties was always the highlight of her week. It meant so much to her. I could truly see the gleam in her eyes, even when the rest of her face was covered with a mask. During those instances when the nursing home would go on lockdown for days and weeks at a time, mom would become very sad and lonely. But the thought of visiting with the Haven cats helped keep her going during those times of despair.

It’s been two years since she passed away after breaking a hip, but I will always be grateful for the joy Kitty Kat Haven brought to her life.
